Yes, some investments will reduce both d and M and some method of apportioning the investment between them needs to be figured out (I expect it to vary on a case by case basis).  Figuring out an investment/benefit strategy for just d is very hard, but I plan to cover a few special cases.</description>

		<description>I think this misses the fact that good investments can help decrease d itself. Investments in design, factoring, commenting, defensive programming reduce long term maintenance but also improve code quality and help get through integration and qa testing quicker. These investments early in the project help pay for themselves in the d time right away.</description>
